The Day of St. Blaise (Blasius), Dubrovniks patron saint - the old man seen carrying the city on the palm of his hand, and whose statues mark the city walls and entrances, has been a special day in Dubrovnik since as far back as the year 972, when it was first celebrated. The celebrations are typically unique to Dubrovnik. It commences on February 02nd, Virgin Mary Candlemas, with the releasing of white pigeons in front of the saints church, the symbol of freedom and peace, and with the raising of St. Blaise (Blasius)s flag on Orlandos Column. On February 03rd, the reliquaries of St. Blaise (Blasius), and a palanquin carrying the greatest of all the reliquaries in the Dubrovnik Cathedral the Shroud of Jesus, are displayed in a procession of banners throughout the city streets and along Stradun, amongst a multitude of believers and ecclesiastical patriarchs, which converge on the city from the entire Dubrovnik region. In front of the Church of St. Blaise (Blasius), the banners are swirled and lowered in a special manner as tribute to the saint that has stood watch over Dubrovnik for centuries. This is an occasion for showing off special techniques, but also for viewing the exquisite and lavish national costumes that are captivating in their originality and beauty. Priests spend the entire day blessing and "embracing" the procession of believers with two intertwined candles around the throat, which is believed to prevent throat illnesses. At dusk on this holy day, the stained glass window sparkle with a special light and the laurel leaves decorating the patron saints church shine. They bid farewell to the faithful in Dubrovnik and their guests until next year, accompanied by the blessings of St. Blaise (Blasius).
